Allergic rhinitis is a non-infective inflammatory condition of the nasal mucosal surface that is irritated by these allergens as a result of inhalation of allergens in the environment. The disease, also known as hay fever among the people, is caused not only by hay but also by many factors.
It is seen in 20% to 40% of the society. It is reflected by runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion, tearing in the eyes, fatigue, sleep disturbance. It is often familial. It should not be forgotten that it can start at any age.
The most common causes of the seasonal type are tree pollen, meadow pollen and weed pollen.
The course of the disease is very related to the region and the environment in which the patient lives.
In the perineal type, which continues throughout the year, house dust mites, cockroaches, pets, fungal moulds can be shown as the cause.
It may be accompanied by allergic bronchitis and asthma at a rate of 30-40%.
Treatment includes avoidance of allergens, anti-allergic treatments, vaccines used for hyposensitisation and surgical treatments.
In surgical treatment, overgrown allergic polyps are removed endoscopically through the nostrils.
